The worm turns?

If the New York Times runs a piece confessing that the media, indeed, may have "baked the cake" against McCain, then it must be so.

Wow. Did you even read the column you are quoting? The column is an OPINION piece, by a speech writer for Bob Dole (read partisan republican). So, the fact that it appears in the New York Times is indicative of nothing.

Furthermore, the guys at Politico (who have shown conservative bias, if anything, since they started their website) do a fairly decent job of explaining why the study means nothing. If simply reporting that McCain trails in the poll is enough to be flagged as "negative" for McCain, then the end result is completely pointless.
